With the summer jobs coming to an end and it’s time to return from the family vacations. It’s time for college students to think about where they are going to live. If you are looking to stay in an apartment instead of a dorm, there are many things you need to keep in mind.
Discuss with your landlord and get all the terms written down. This contract is called as a lease. It will cover factors such as duration of the tenancy, day to pay the rent, any additional fee for being late on the rent, what activities the landlord would do etc. Speak to someone you trust or with your family member before doing this.
As parents, make sure that you and your child has a copy of the original as well as a copy of the lease agreement. Store it in a cloud or over the internet so that you can get access to it anytime. In case you are going to support your child in making the payments, ensure that you have also signed the agreement in addition to your child.
This will also be a good time to think about how the long the lease is for and what kind of things you agree to before getting to live with a stranger.
